Description / idea

UG Academic Cultural Center “Alternator”, the Department of Scandinavian Studies UG and „Miłość Blondynki” Film Club invite everyone to the second edition of the Nordic culture festival „Nordic Focus Festival”.

Starting on 23 November, for three days, without leaving the country, we will be able to feel the refreshing breeze of Scandinavian culture and immerse ourselves into the life philosophy of the residents of the Nordic countries.

During the NFF festival we will discuss the image of the Nordic community as depicted in literature, films and TV series. We shall look into the culture and life in the Nordic countries and consider whether that reality influences the population of the rest of Europe and of the world.

During this year’s edition of the festival, special events will cover the centenary of Finland’s independence and the culture of the insular outskirts of the North. We will discover as well many faces of Denmark during the Danish thematic block. Travellers will tell us why the Nordic countries are worthy of a visit and share with us, among other secrets, some of the mysteries of Iceland and Lappland.

For those interested in the way the unique Danish and Norwegian letters (æ, ø and å) are pronounced, we have organised linguistic workshops. During the festival you will also have a chance to get yourself acquainted with the Finnish language.

Nordic Focus Festival means also attractions for the kids. The young will be able to visit a Viking Village, as well as watch a film about their Finnish peers. Literary workshops for pre-school children have been organised, during which the kids will have a chance to make friends with Albert, a character from a popular Swedish children book series. Participation in workshops requires sending an application to this e-mail address: k.weiher@mng.gda.pl

The main guests of the festival will be: a Danish writer and director Daniel Dencik (Moon Rider, Expedition To The End of The World), Danish writer Lisbeth Nebelong (The Faroe Blues [Færø Blues]), and a Polish publicist and writer living in Sweden Katarzyna Tubylewicz (The Moralists. How the Swedes Learn from Their Mistakes and Other Stories [Moraliści. Jak Szwedzi uczą się na błędach i inne historie]). The special travel block will comprise presentations by three bloggers: the author of Szwecjoblog, Natalia Kołaczek (About Sweden, and so What [I cóż, że o Szwecji]), co-author of the blog IceStory, Piotr Mikołajczyk (The Whispers of the Stones. Stories from Desolate Iceland [Szepty kamieni. Historie z opuszczonej Islandii]), and “Globfoterka”, Emilia Długa (Lapland – Where an Aurora Dances You to Sleep [Laponia – tam, gdzie zorza polarna tańczy na dobranoc]).

The event accompanying the festival is the conference Scandinavia – Poland. People, Politics, Economy and Culture, organised by Polsk-Skandinavisk Forskningsinstitut and University of Gdańsk Faculty of History.

During these November days, Nordic Focus Festival will let us feel the atmosphere of the Nordic countries.
